Choosing a Cat Carrier
Whether travelling by car or by airline with a cat, it is important to find the very best cat carrier that is most suitable to make sure the cat is comfortable and safe for the duration of the trip.
A small or makeshift cat carrier might be fine for quick trips to the vet, but when travelling over longer distances something that is much sturdier should be used. A cat carrier is not just a bag, it is for transporting a live animal.
For travelling by air, choose an airline approved cat carrier to avoid any problems when you arrive at the airport with your cat carrier.
The cat carrier needs to be large enough for the cat to be comfortable. The cat must be able to stand and turn around easily. Check the maximum weight supported by the cat carrier. If the cat is too heavy then go for a larger sized cat carrier in order to keep your cat safe. Your cat should not hang out of the cat carrier.
Check that there is proper ventilation on all sides of the cat carrier and that the cat can maintain privacy when needed and make eye contact from inside the cat carrier.
Make sure that the latches and fastening devices are secure so that your cat cannot escape from the cat carrier. Some carriers may include a restraining mechanism to secure your cat in transit. Ensure that any external carrying straps on the cat carrier are strong and comfortable, some may be adjustable.
Some cat carriers may also be padded for the handler’s comfort. For smaller cats a soft cat carrier may be most appropriate, for example when the cat carrier sits on the lap during a flight.
Check that the cat carrier is made of safe non-toxic materials and has no loose parts inside.
For longer journeys, make sure that the cat carrier has a suitable place for food and water. To keep your cat calm and relaxed during the journey, consider placing an item of clothing or the cat’s soft toy inside the cat carrier as it will have a familiar smell to them.
When positioning your cat carrier during a journey, ensure that it is on a flat level surface for your cat’s comfort.
Finally remember that a cardboard box is never a good idea for a cat carrier. It lacks ventilation, and has no structural integrity. Cutting holes in the box reduces whatever stability the box may have had originally. Please, instead buy a more appropriate and sturdy cat carrier.
